Bernie

Bernie is a Boro Legend joining Middlesbrough FC in 1985 and going on to score 147 goals in 380 games for Boro between 1985 and 1993, placing him sixth in Middlesbroughs all-time list of scorers.

Born in Paisley, Scotland, he was the top scorer north of the border with Albion Rovers, before his move to Teesside where his trademark goal celebration of standing on the fence at the Holgate end of Ayresome Park made him a Teesside icon.

Bernie also won seven caps for the Republic of Ireland, earning a place in their World Cup squad for Italia 1990.

After his playing career was over Bernie established soccer schools for young potential footballers before beginning his partnership with Ali on Century fm and on Boro TV as the pair fronted the first television channel dedicated to a football club.

Bernie shoots from the lip as effectively as he did in the six yard box but occasionally he can get into trouble as he once infamously remarked in 1998 “if Boro win at Old Trafford I will show my backside in Binns window,” after a 3-2 Boro win the Slaven rear was put on display!

Bernie is a key member of The Three Legends on Century fm a football phone-in that attracts a huge nightly audience and you can join in the fun by calling 0191 4772000 Monday-Friday between 6 and 8pm.

The Boro Legend is also a partner in Linthorpe Publishing and his autobiography Legend? was a best seller with all profits, in excess of £32,000, donated to the Ann Charlton Lodge in Redcar for sufferers of MS.
