Ali

Ali is a Boro lad who attended Whinney Banks School and first went to see Boro play at Ayresome Park in 1967 as the team won a dramatic promotion. Early hero was centre forward John Hickton who was not only a great striker but also took ferocious penalty kicks with his run up starting in Redcar.

Ali began commentating on the Boro in 1981 for BBC Radio Cleveland before joining Century fm in 1995 and has reported on over 1,000 games including all the cup finals, of which the historic Carling Cup triumph over Bolton at the Millennium Stadium Cardiff in February 2004 was a highlight.

The UEFA Cup campaign also had some unforgettable moments and who can forget the semi final against Steaua Bucharest when everyone went round Ali’s for a parmo.

In October 2006 Ali, together with Bernie, received the Gold Award at the New York Radio Festival for Best Sports Coverage.

Ali is also a partner in Linthorpe Publishing whose works include The Road to Eindhoven and the Class of 86.

In addition Ali produces and presents for Boro TV Limited all Middlesbrough Football Club’s dvd requirements and was also a producer on the popular dvd “Lucky Slaven”.

Ali is an after dinner speaker and m.c.

Away from Boro commentary Ali is a patron of Zoes Place and a committee member for the Middlesbrough Former Players Association.
